C. MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR RESUME
Here are some suggestions for making your resume effective:
• Not only should you identify activities and awards, but also explain what they are, what positions you held, and what you did or accomplished.
• Your resume should be organized in reverse chronological order: list the most recent activities and awards first. Also, begin each section with the most important activities, followed by less important ones.
• After page 1, make sure that for each subsequent page you include the page number and your name.
• Since admissions readers will probably give your resume about 30 seconds, it must be organized and formatted so that is very easy to read. Your resume must help a reader “get who you are” very quickly.
• Some colleges call for a 1-page resume, and others give directions for no more than 2 pages. If a school to which you apply requests a short resume, it is useful to start out with a long version and then cut it down. No matter what, follow the application directions, whatever they are.
ENDNOTE
An activities resume is not only a way of providing colleges with information about who you are, it is also a powerful means for learning about yourself.
A Model Activities Resume is available for you to view and download in The Checklists section of this website. The Checklists section also provides a Sample Resume of a real student.
If you would like to have examples of how to describe a variety of activities on an activities resume ranging from artistic, caretaking, community service, computer, work, foreign exchange student, music, sports, student government, theater arts, tutoring, and writing/journalism activities, there is a special section for this in the printable, color version of Guide 8: Your Activities Resume.
The printable color version of Guide 8 also offers fives sample resumes of actual students, including private and public school students, low, average and high GPA students, students from different geographic areas, students with different activity backgrounds, as well as an athlete and student with learning disabilities.
