ENDNOTE
In the end, contact with colleges is something you do to:

1. Become educated about campuses and the kind of experiences their respective students have there.
2. Personalize a process that often seems cold and impersonal.
3. Create advocates for yourself within admissions offices

It’s just common sense that the better they know you, the more likely it is that they will choose you during to be a student at their college.

Books
At the moment, there are no books written on the subjects of demonstrated interest and/or contact with colleges. However, the following books do offer information about the subject:

Hernandez, Michelle A. A Is For Admission: The Insiders Guide To Getting Into The Ivy League And Other Top Colleges. New York, Warner Books, 1997.
While not popular with some admissions professionals, students love this book and Hernandez does describe the way Ivy League schools look at applicants.

Springer, Sally P., Jon Reider, Marion R. Franck. Admission Matters: What Students and Parents Need To Know About Getting Into College. San Francisco, CA, Jossey Bass, A Wiley Imprint. 2009.
This is probably the best college admissions book available, written by two seasoned professionals and a writer who is very familiar with the topic.

Steinberg, Jacques. The Gate-Keepers: Inside The Admissions Process of a Premier College. New York, Viking, 2002.
Editior of the New York Times educational blog, The Choice, Steinberg offers great insight into the admissions process, including contact with colleges.
