FAQ #1: How many colleges should I apply to?

ANSWER: In theory, there is no limit to the number of colleges to which you can apply. We suggest about 8-12 divided into the different acceptance categories of Reach, Good Chance and Pretty Sure Thing. However, some public and private high schools have policies that limit the number of college applications students can submit. Be sure to find out what your high school’s policy is.

FRESHMAN AND SOPHOMORE YEAR TIMELINES FOR DEVELOPING YOUR COLLEGE LIST

STUDENTS
• It’s never too early to begin thinking about colleges, but during 9th and 10th grades, do it in a lighthearted, unhurried way.

• As you hear college students or their parents rave about different colleges, make a note of the name/s of the college/s and what is said. If so inclined, also read articles about colleges in newspapers, magazines and on the Internet.

PARENTS
• Freshman or sophomore year is a good time to create a special file for college materials. Frequently, parents do this because students simply aren’t ready to think about colleges.

• Parents can plan college “drive-throughs” as a part of vacation trips.
See College Visits Guide 6 on how to do that.

PARENT TIP! If your freshman or sophomore is resistant to thinking about college, don’t worry; many students feel this way. That doesn’t mean that you can’t begin gathering information, but in an unobtrusive way.
