Websites
In truth, there are no websites solely devoted to the subject of making a final decision about where to go to college. However, every April a flurry of written pieces about waitlists, deferrals, and how to appeal an admissions decision, etc. begin to appear on admissions-related websites such Collegeboard.com, College Confidential.com, and Collegewise.com. Articles on these topics also show up in the Education sections of U.S. News & World Report, and in columns by various writers for The New York Times (Jacques Steinberg) The Washington Post (Jay Matthews), USA Today (Mary Beth Marklein) and The Wall Street Journal (Sue Shellenbarger), as well as local newspapers. Even blogs such as The Daily Beast are getting into the game.

To gain access to this information, go to the respective website or use a search engine such as Google and type in some of these words:

College admissions: denials, deferrals and waitlists
Gap year before college

As noted in FAQ#3, every May in a section called the “Space Availability Survey Results” the National Association for College Admission Counseling website offers a list colleges throughout the US who are still open to accepting applications.

Books
Some, but not all, admissions book noted in the Books People Rave About section of this website offer chapters or sections on topics covered in this guide. At the moment, there are no books devoted solely to the subject.

However, there are a number of books devoted to the subject of gap year. Two of the best are:

Griffith, Susan. Taking a Gap Year, new edition. Oxford, England, Vacation Work, distributed in the USA by The Globe Pequot Press, Guildford, Connecticut, 2003.

Haigler, Karl and Rae Nelson. The Gap-Year Advantage: Helping Your Child Benefit from Time Off Before or During College. New York, St. Martin’s Griffin, 2005.
