Bauld, Harry. On Writing The College Application Essay: Secrets Of A Former Ivy League Admissions Officer. New York, Collins, 1987.
Not a recent book, but probably one of the best books written about how to write an effective essay. Students say that this book really helps them.

Goldberg, Natalie. Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within. Boston, MA, Shambhala Publications, 2005.
Still the best “how to write” book ever written.

Mason, Michael James. How to Write a Winning College Application Essay. New York, Three Rivers Press, 2000.
Everything you’ve ever wanted to know about college essays, and then some. This book helps students to identify something about themselves that colleges admissions offices will find interesting.

Staff of the Harvard Crimson. 50 Successful Harvard Application Essays: What Worked for Them Can Help You Get into the College of Your Choice, 2nd Edition. New York, St. Martin’s Griffin, 2005.
